スゴ腕ハッカーが世界初のオープンソースPC「Novena」を制作

Chumbyのハードウェア開発に大きく貢献したアンドリュー・“バニー”・ファン氏は、Xboxのハッキングを行ったことで知られる有名なハッカーでもあり、MITの博士号を持つインテリでもあります。そんなファン氏とファームウェアハッカーのxobs氏が、基板からOSまでオープンソースで制作したギークなPC「Novena」を制作し、クラウドファンディングプラットフォームで資金を募っています。

普通のPCとは逆方向にディスプレイが展開。

PCの前にキーボードを置いて使用しています。これはNovenaのデスクトップタイプで、他にもノートPCタイプ、木製ノートPCタイプが制作されています。

PCを使っているのは制作者の1人アンドリュー・ファン氏。彼はエンジニアの知識をハッキングから得られる「Hacking the Xbox」という本も執筆しています。

Novenaに使用されているメインボードはこんな感じで、基板に関する全ての情報はオープンソースとして公開されています。

ボードにはヒートシンクや拡張パーツが取り付けられています。

青いケースは「Gen-2 hacker Case」と名付けられており、普通のノートPCとは反対方向に開くのが特徴。ディスプレイを開くことで基板がむき出しになるため、ドライバーなしで内部へアクセス可能です。底面にはボード固定用のネジ穴が等間隔で開けられています。

各種ポート穴の開いたシンプルなアルミ製ベゼルも簡単に取り外し可能。1台につき予備を含め2本のベゼルがついているため、壊れたり、カスタマイズ用に使用することができます。

以下はノートPCバージョンとして全てのパーツをセットしたところ。

ディスプレイをたたむとこんな感じ。なお、OSのソースコードもGitHubで公開されている世界初のオープンソースPCのため、基板・OSともにどのように改変・拡張するかは所有者の自由です。

1つ1つ手作りされた珍しいデザインで、サイドはアルミ製。
