On July 4, 2024, Australia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Richard Marles announced that the country would invest 2 billion Australian dollars over 10 years to introduce AWS cloud systems.

The main users of TS Cloud will be Australian defence and intelligence agencies, with rollout scheduled to begin in 2027.

The aim of this decision is twofold: first, to improve the resilience of defense communications networks, i.e. their ability to remain functional or restore operation when under attack, and to secure highly sensitive data.

'This will improve our ability to share and analyze our nation's most sensitive data quickly, at scale and securely, and provide opportunities to leverage cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning,' the Ministry of Defense emphasized.

The second point is strengthening cooperation with the US military. Regarding this, Minister Marles said at the press conference, 'We definitely need to introduce cloud services to the US, which is an important alliance partner. By doing so, we will be able to secure a common computing operating environment with the US defense forces in the future.'

According to the IT news site The Register, the US is already building a TS cloud using AWS, and the UK is also using AWS to handle confidential information.

Therefore, given its cooperation with the UKUSA Agreement , a framework for sharing classified information among the five countries of the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, known as the Five Eyes, partnering with AWS was an 'easy choice,' The Register points out.

The A$2 billion budget also includes funding for three new purpose-built data centres in Australia, which are estimated to create up to 2,000 jobs in total.

Dave Levy, vice president, Worldwide Public Sector, AWS, said: 'This partnership will enable the Australian government and its defense and intelligence agencies to securely share data, accelerate innovation, and accomplish their missions faster. We support the Australian government's mission to protect and advance Australia's interests and remain committed to our long-term commitment to Australia, helping to drive innovation and improve lives in our communities.'
