A bug where all printers are treated as 'HP LaserJet' in Windows Update

It has become clear that Windows Update has caused an issue where all printer models are changed to 'HP LaserJet'. The cause appears to be a metadata mix-up. Fortunately, there is no situation where printing becomes impossible, and Microsoft plans to update the metadata to correct it.

Although the cause of the problem has not been officially clarified, the news site Windows Latest reported that after HP released hardware information for Windows Update in the last week of November 2023, there was a mix-up of metadata. We predict that all PCs that have applied the Windows Update that referenced this information will now recognize all printers as being from the HP LaserJet series.

In fact, Windows Latest has confirmed in multiple environments that the problem occurred on all PCs that had Windows Update applied. The same thing happened in the past with virtual machines that did not have a printer connected.

Below is a screenshot of the printer information shown by Windows Latest. The model name of 'Microsoft Print to PDF' is 'HP LaserJet M101-M106'.

Normally, the model name is 'Microsoft Print to PDF'.

The problem is only with 'displaying the model name' and printing can be done without any problems.

However, a strange phenomenon has been occurring since November 2023 in which the 'HP Smart app' was installed in environments where non-HP printers were used, and Windows Latest said that this problem was the cause of the strange phenomenon. I'm pointing it out.

Microsoft and HP have acknowledged the existence of this problem and plan to release an update to resolve the issue within the next few days.
