Steam Deck OLED has arrived, and not only the screen but also the battery performance and download speed have improved, and the price of the previous model has been reduced

An OLED (organic EL) model of Valve's portable gaming device 'Steam Deck' has been released. In addition to richer colors than the previous model's LCD (liquid crystal display), performance other than the display has also been improved, such as battery life extended from 40Whr to 50Whr and Wi-Fi 6E support.

Introducing Steam Deck OLED - November 16 - YouTube

Steam Deck's HDR OLED display features ``stunning contrast,'' ``outstanding clarity,'' and ``a larger screen,'' allowing users to experience richer colors and deeper blacks. Battery life will be improved by 30-50% and download speeds will be up to 3x faster. By increasing the size of the fan and improving heat exhaust performance, it is said to be able to operate at lower temperatures.

The specifications of 'Steam Deck OLED' and the previous model 'Steam Deck LCD' are as follows. There are three models of Steam Deck LCD: 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB, but only the 256GB model is listed here.

In addition to the above, the 1TB model is equipped with a 'limited startup video' and 'limited virtual keyboard theme.' While other models come with a carrying case, the 1TB model comes with a 'carrying case with a removable interior.'

Other

changes include support for waking from sleep from a Bluetooth controller, improved display repair/replacement procedures, and a 30% reduction in resume time.

According to The Verge , which reviewed the device, the larger heatsink makes the fan quieter and lowers the device's temperature by up to 10 degrees. The frame rate drop due to thermal throttling has also been reduced.

It should be noted that the main focus of Steam Deck OLED is to change the display, and the next generation powerful models such as 'Steam Deck Pro' and 'Steam Deck 2' have not appeared. According to The Verge, although it was confirmed that 'Cyberpunk 2077' had lower power consumption and quieter fans, 'Starfield' sometimes froze during play. Battery life is 2 hours and 11 minutes when playing CONTROL at maximum 80FPS settings. The previous model did not exceed 2 hours at 60FPS setting.

Engadget said, ``It's clearer and more responsive,'' ``The built-in trackpad's haptic feedback felt more accurate,'' and ``It's not too noisy and definitely comfortable.''

Rock Paper Shotgun says, ``The new thumbstick makes the center part easier to grip'' and ``brings out great contrast and color diversity that was lost in past models.''

The price is 84,800 yen including tax for the 512GB model of Steam Deck OLED, and 99,800 yen including tax for the 1TB model. The Steam Deck LCD 256GB model has been reduced in price by 20,000 yen to 59,800 yen including tax.

Available in Japan through authorized distributor KOMODO . The release date is Friday, November 17, 2023.

In addition, a ``Limited Edition'' with a skeleton body will be sold only in the United States and Canada. Only the 1TB model is sold, and the price is $30 (about 4,500 yen) higher than the regular product.

IGN

interviews Valve designers Jeremy Celan and Jay Shaw, who worked on the OLED model. When asked about power efficiency, Shaw said, ``OLED is much more power efficient and takes up less space inside the device, so we were able to use a slightly larger battery. The APU has also been reduced from 7nm to 6nm. 'Now you can enjoy a brighter screen, higher refresh rate, and longer battery life.'

In September 2023, Valve said, ``The next generation of Steam Deck models may arrive in late 2025 or later,'' but Shaw said that regarding the arrival of these next-generation models, `` We have not yet considered Steam Deck 2, but of course we will continue to innovate as time goes on, so we will explore various possibilities.'
