Sakamoto was born in 1952 and is from Tokyo. He learned piano from the age of 3, and started his career as a musician while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School.

In 1978, he formed the Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. YMO has released many songs such as 'RYDEEN' (composed by Yukihiro Takahashi), 'TECHNOPOLIS' (composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto), 'TONG POO' (composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto), 'Kimi ni, Munekyun' (composed by YMO). They produced impressive music.

YMO member Yukihiro Takahashi passed away on January 11, 2023 at the age of 70 due to aspiration pneumonia caused by a brain tumor.
