Tesla to Upgrade to New-Generation Fully-Automated Chips for Older Model Users

Tesla has been equipped with new hardware ' HW 3.0 ' for fully automatic driving (FSD) on Model S, Model X and Model 3 from 2019. CEO Earon Mask has announced that this 'HW 3.0' will be upgraded if users of older HW 2.5 and other models have purchased an add-on package.

In September 2014, Tesla started installing version 1.0 (HW1.0) of hardware for automatic operation. At this point, the automatic driving function is off, and from October 2015 automatic driving can be used.

After that, HW 2.0 was released in October 2016, and HW 3.0 was released in 2019. It is reported that 643 million Tesla cars for autonomous driving were delivered by the second quarter of 2019, of which 528,570 were equipped with HW 2.0 or more.

According to Mask CEO, the upgrade to HW 3.0 will be done by those who purchased HW 2.0 or higher with 'fully automated' add-on packages. The package price is $ 6000 (about 650,000 yen).

It is said that not all Tesla users have purchased this package, but Mask says that the upgrade target is 500,000.

The upgrade is expected at the end of the fourth quarter of 2019.
