Comparing the high-end smartphone 'Google Pixel 3' equipped with Android 9 Pie and iPhone XS, how much difference there is?

Google's genuine smartphone " Pixel 3 " with Android 9 Pie and Qualcomm's 10 nm process SoC " Snapdragon 845 " is exactly the model representing the Android OS type. So I compare various sizes and specs with Apple's high-end smartphone with " iPhone XS " of almost the same size.

The left is Pixel 3 of 145.6 mm × 68.2 mm, the iPhone XS of 143.6 mm × 70.9 mm on the right. If you compare it side by side, it is certainly Pixel 3 may be a little slender than iPhone XS. iPhone XS is gorilla glass with high transparency on the back, but Pixel 3 is etched glass below the camera.

The thickness is 7.9 mm for Pixel 3, 7.7 mm for iPhone XS, there is little difference. Although the lens part of the camera protrudes out of both, iPhone XS protrudes more than the Pixel 3 The thickness of the lens is getting bigger.

I actually tried Pixel 3. Especially it is not too big, the feel of the etching glass on the back is also good. Since the power button and the volume button are on the same right side surface, it is a place to worry about a little difficulty when shooting screenshots, but there is no problem with the operation itself.

After grasping Pixel 3, I feel the immediate realization with the iPhone XS in hand, the heavy weight and the tactile feel of back glass. Also, whether iPhone XS is affected by the width of only 2.7 mm wider than Pixel 3, the ease of holding is quite different, Pixel 3 holds the impression that it fits closer to the hand than iPhone XS It was.

As a result of actually measuring the weight, Pixel 3 was 148 g, while ....

iPhone XS is 177 g. Pixel 3 is about 20% lighter than iPhone XS.

On the upper rear part of Pixel 3 is only one wide-angle camera with 12.2 megapixels · f / 1.8. On the other hand, the iPhone XS is a dual camera model with two cameras: 12 megapixels · f / 1.8 wide angle and 12 megapix · f / 2.4 telephoto. In addition, Pixel 3 has a fingerprint recognition sensor on the back.

The place where the display was arranged is the following. Pixel 3 is a 5.5 in. Flexible OLED (organic EL) display with a resolution of 2160 × 1080 pixels. On the other hand, the iPhone XS is a 5.8 inch OLED display with a resolution of 2436 × 1125 pixels.

At the top of the display, Pixel 3 has a bezel, whereas iPhone XS is notched. There is also the size of the display itself, and the screen of iPhone XS feels pretty broad as you are still using.

◆ Benchmark
I put Pixel 3 and iPhone XS in a room with room temperature 21 degrees and humidity 40% and measured the benchmark score with the smartphone benchmark application " Antutu ".

The overall result is that Pixel 3 is 282606, iPhone XS is 343083, iPhone XS is higher.

Looking at the internal division, the CPU is still overwhelmingly on the iPhone XS. Pixel 3 has Snapdragon 845 and iPhone XS has Apple's 7 nm process SoC "A12 Bionic", but again the performance of the A12 Bionic CPU is big.

On the other hand, the GPU slightly exceeds the score for iPhone XS, but there is little difference from Pixel 3.

Although the iPhone XS is overwhelmingly high in data security in the operation performance (UX), the image processing and the user experience result that Pixel 3 greatly exceeds iPhone XS.

Pixel 3 was better than memory read / write performance. IPhone XS is higher in RAM (storage), but in ROM, Pixel 3 was starting to score higher scores.

I took a picture
The camera of Pixel 3 is said to be supported by Google developed artificial intelligence (AI), and it is said that it can take beautiful even with a single camera. I actually shot the same subject with iPhone XS with equivalent camera performance.

I took a picture of the evening sky. The following were taken with Pixel 3.

And this is what I took with iPhone XS. Pictures taken with iPhone XS are bright coloring in the sky blue and the walls are bright and beautiful. On the other hand, the picture of Pixel 3 is slightly darker, but the subtle shades of the clouds that are dyed in orange in sunset are expressed, which makes the feeling closer to nature.

A vending machine of night was taken with Pixel 3.

The same image is taken with iPhone XS at the same time at the same vending machine. Impression that Pixel 3 is finished with a slightly stronger contrast.

The potted plant lighted on the street was pretty bright with Pixel 3, and I could shoot clearly the contrast between the yellow flower and the green leaf ... ...

iPhone XS is thin and dark photos. I am amazed that different pictures can be taken so far under the same conditions. Since Pixel 3 supports photography by AI, it seems that it adjusts brightness and color tones better. In addition, the night application " Night Sight " mode will also appear in the Pixel series camera application.

This time I shot in portrait mode of Pixel 3. Although it is a single camera, it is blurred in the background firmly.

And the following image was taken in portrait mode of iPhone XS. Compared to iPhone XS, you can see well that Pixel 3 is better blurred in the background. However, with iPhone XS, it is possible to adjust the blur of the background by taking advantage of the dual camera after shooting, but there is a difference that Pixel 3 can not change blur after shooting.

In the room, amiibo was arranged at different positions so as to be short distance, medium distance, long distance, and I tried shooting in portrait mode from the same position. Pixel 3 appears slightly wider than iPhone XS.

Short distance squid

Medium distance Mario

Long distance Ikagar & Ikaboy.

I shot with iPhone XS under the same condition.

Short distance squid

Medium distance Mario

Long distance Ikagar & Ikaboy. The iPhone XS is still weaker in blurring, and the picture of Pixel 3 shows more clearly the effect unique to portrait shooting, "Let's raise the target with blurring". Pixel 3 felt better than iPhone XS in terms of "easily taking photogenic pictures". It was a pretty nice point to be able to take clear portrait photos so far with a single camera.
