People in LIGO who discovered the gravitational waves "Do you have any questions?"

Reddit which is like a giant bulletin board abroad has a special project called "AMA: Ask Me Anything" which a famous person himself appeared, but this time thereSuccessful observation of gravity waveLaser Observatory · LIGO researchers arrived.

We are the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and we have made the first direct observation of gravitational waves and the first observation of two black holes merging. Ask us anything!: IAmA

A part of that Q & A looks like this.

Q:
How does gravitational wave act on substance?

A:
Unlike light and radio waves, it does not work. The gravitational waves pass through all and extend the space slightly in the process.

Q:
Can gravitational waves be used for energy generation? Is there energy in the gravitational wave?

A:
Gravitational waves are very difficult to measure, but extracting effective energy from gravitational waves is also a challenge as well. The effect of gravitational waves on substances is negligible, and even if they carry large amounts of energy, they will all go somewhere.

Q:
The following figure is coming out, but I am not sure. What direction is the gravitational wave moving towards?

A:
In this case, the gravitational wave is moving through the screen you are viewing (from the side of you toward the other side of the screen, or from the other side of the screen to your side). As with electromagnetic waves, gravity waves are "side waves" that act perpendicularly to the direction of waves, like ripples in ponds. In contrast, the "vertical wave" acting in the same direction as the wave, there are sound waves.

Q:
When I understood that I had a massive discovery of the century, what was the first thing I thought?

A:
I could not believe it. At first, I thought that some kind of signal was injected. However, I understood that it was not so, I was very excited. The biggest problem is that it was too perfect.Signal-to-noise ratio (SN ratio)There were up to 24, and the pattern of repetition was clear. At first it seemed not genuine. We thought that it was more "detect faint", but contrary to expectations, it was a big, clear signal.

Q:
Were you observing stations in Washington State and Observatories in Louisiana from each other since the first few weeks? Since when did you start comparing data and signals? An experiment group of CERN's large hadron collision type accelerator,ATLASI know that CMS is an independent relationship, is LIGO the same as well?

A:
Data streams from each detector in Hanford, Washington and Livingston, Louisiana are constantly being compared with each other. One of the best ways to determine whether it is a real problem, just noise or a signal is to use both detector data to verify. Again, data from both detectors was used.

Q:
If the gravity wave is strong enough, can human beings feel and experience gravitational waves passing through the body?

A:
About this matter, I (a student at the University of Glasgow) talked to the supervisor several weeks ago. According to the calculation, if you are near the black hole which is being united in the space ship, it is suggested that you will feel the power comparable when you are standing next to a speaker ringing music with a concert It was a result to be done. Perhaps it should feel that vibration propagates through the body, but I am sure that it will not get hurt by that.

Q:
Does the discovery of this gravitational wave make it necessary to recalculate existing physics standards?

A:
not yet. This first detection is in coordination with the expectation we got from physics. The proportion of natural binary black holes (binary black hole binaries) and binary black hole groups is consistent with the theoretical prediction. And this signal is in agreement with what we predicted from general relativity theory. From now on, we will carefully observe whether something deviates from theory will not occur. It is time when true fun begins when that something happens.
