According to IDC, PC sales in the first quarter of 2013 were 76.3 million units, recording a downward trend for the fourth consecutive quarter. The decrease was 13.9% as the unit sales in the first quarter of 2012 was 886 million units. The forecast was a decrease of 7% level, so it means that the market is getting cooler with the momentum far surpassing the forecast.

Looking at the top five vendors, HP (Hewlett-Packard), the industry's largest, decreased 23.7% from 15.73 million units last year to 12 million units. Market share has retreated from 17.7% to 15.7%.

The No. 2 Lenovo is 11.71 million last year, 11.7 million this year, plus or minus 0% in unit sales. As other manufacturers dropped the figure, the share increased from 13.2% to 15.3%.

All three manufacturers, ranking third in the DELL, fourth in the Acer, and fifth in the ASUS, have dropped their numbers, especially Acer, which is down 31.3% in negative sales. Although the rankings managed to remain stable without any change from the first quarter of 2012, the distance to ASUS is now closer to the momentum that is close to Dell.

While being pushed by the momentum of smartphone and tablet, it appeared expected that the downward trend of PC sales volume will be stopped by the appearance of Windows 8 which is the new OS, but it can not be said that the role was fully fulfilled IDC vice president Bob O'Donnell pointed out that "Windows 8 did not accelerate the market, but rather helped the PC market stagnate", which is a negative factor. "If you want to revitalize the PC market, Microsoft will be forced to make a lot of hardship decisions," he commented.

Growth rate of PC sales volume recently (1 year and 3 months). The first quarter of 2012 was still a plus, but it has steadily falling to the right.

In addition, despite the overall trend of decline even by region, the Lenovo in the United States has maintained a good result of 13% increase over last year. The market share of the US market is HP, the second place is Dell, the third place is Apple, the fourth place is Toshiba, and the fifth place is Lenovo, but it is now in a state where there is almost no difference from Toshiba.

In the future, as tablets and smart phones of various OS come out, how much PC can remain ...?
